From Alex B.

Culture surrounds us in all aspects of our lives as we re-write the history books of the future. Without culture Human beings are nothing other then animals roaming a planets surface. I selected to take this course thinking I was going to be studying a taste of the lifestyles of people all over the globe. However, after week one I am excited to know that this class is going to be much more of a heated debate on what the hell cutural studies even is. Wich brought me to the question, what does culture even mean? I have never really thought about that question prior to this class. Now that I have actually thought about it I have come to the conclusion that culture is who we are as an individual within a greater group. It does not necessarily mean race or gender either. Culture defines who we are on a deeper level. It can represent common intrests, or activities that really describe who we are as people. For instance I feel that my being a musician defines
my culture more then my race does. So clearly music is an enormous part of my culture more so then just being Mexican.

But how do we separate the individual from the culture he or she inhabits? Is there some part of one's persona that remains truly free from culture? How can that be?
